Wise’s journey has been guided by its co-founders, Taavet Hinrikus and Kristo Käärmann. Taavet, the company’s first employee at Skype, and Kristo, an ex-PwC consultant, joined forces to address the financial inefficiencies they encountered when exchanging currencies. The company has since built a team of experts in technology, finance to drive its mission.

A Short History of Wise (TransferWise)

Wise’s journey began when Taavet and Kristo realized the inequities in traditional currency exchange. They developed a peer-to-peer system where they exchanged currencies directly, effectively cutting out the middlemen and costly fees.

Wise was born out of the desire to make cross-border money transfers fair, affordable, and transparent. Its initial approach challenged the conventional banking model. Over the years, Wise expanded its services beyond simple currency exchange to include international money transfers, business solutions, and came up with features like Borderless Account.

Wise gained widespread recognition for its disruptive approach, attracting millions of users from around the world and facilitating transfers in over 50 currencies. Wise’s team is constantly building new products and features that help them get closer to their mission of building money without borders: moving it instantly, transparently, conveniently, and – eventually – for free.
