    Key Takeaways

    • Choosing the best AI assistant depends on how well the AI model aligns with your specific needs and workflows.
    • Both ChatGPT and Gemini represent leading conversational AI technologies but differ in approach and integration capabilities.
    • The ongoing evolution of AI models means today’s best choice may shift tomorrow as new features and improvements emerge.
    • Evaluating ChatGPT vs Gemini requires assessing both the quality of interactions and the practical utility in real-world applications.

    ChatGPT vs Gemini: An Introduction

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is miles ahead of the competition when it comes to the number of users. Recent reports have recorded around 400+ million weekly active users. This highly customizable conversational AI is arguably the best AI assistant out there when it comes to handling nested and layered instructions. It is also great with writing code, generating and processing images, and so much more.

Google’s digital assistant, Gemini, is actually the latest version of the Google Assistant. According to the latest reports, the user base of this digital assistant is estimated to be around 275 million monthly active users.  A highly capable AI model in its own right, Gemini is best suited for factual queries, moderately complex prompts, image generation, and integration with other Google services, among other applications.

    ChatGPT vs Gemini: Conversational Abilities

    • ChatGPT: ChatGPT is excellent at maintaining the flow of conversation. It does a great job of recalling and applying previously issued information/instructions. This makes it highly suitable for tasks that require detailed explanations and creative input.
    • Gemini: Google’s digital assistant is also capable of handling complex prompts and maintaining context, but public opinion is fairly unanimous that it lags behind ChatGPT in its conversational AI capabilities.

Performance with real prompts in multi-layered conversations (free versions tested):

Prompt: “Do you remember our conversations regarding SEO?”

(Note: As a part of my professional work, I have used both AI models to conduct research regarding SEO over the past few months.)

ChatGPT: While the bit about me being “an expert content writer” might be an exaggeration, ChatGPT’s response clearly shows that it has the context and background information relevant to my prompt.

Gemini: This conversational AI clearly does not have any context for my query and context is restricted to single sessions.

ChatGPT vs Gemini: Integration & Accessibility

    • ChatGPT: This conversational AI tool is integrated with Apple’s latest iOS 18.4 update. It expands Siri’s capabilities to handle more complex tasks – writing, image cleanup, better user experience, etc. This integration benefits users of Apple devices.
    • Gemini: It offers a smooth integration with various Google services, such as Google Workspace. This is incredibly helpful for tasks like summarizing emails, working with PDFs, exporting responses to Google Docs, generating tables for Google Sheets, etc. This integration enhances its accessibility on Android devices.

ChatGPT vs Gemini: Creative & Multimodal Capabilities

In comparing ChatGPT vs Gemini for their multimodal capabilities, both AI models are fairly similar when it comes to text, image input, programming code, and handling different types of files. That said, there are some important differences as well.

    • ChatGPT: OpenAI recently added an image-generation ability – Studio Ghibli effects – that can be used to transform real-life photos using different artistic styles. This new capability has also raised several concerns about artistic expression and IP rights. The potential exploitation of this technology to create fake documents and identification papers is another area of concern.
    • Gemini: Google’s digital assistant has an Audio Overview feature that uses the power of AI to generate engaging podcasts from written content. This is a very powerful tool for creators of audio content.

Performance with real prompts in image generation (free versions tested):

Prompt: “Generate a photorealistic image of a city, depicting a scene where, years after meteors have eliminated most of the human population, some people are still struggling to survive.”

ChatGPT: The image generated by OpenAI’s digital assistant was closer to being photorealistic and was better able to capture the nuances of desolation and hopelessness.

Gemini: On the contrary, the image generated by Google’s digital assistant seems slightly cartoonish and mechanical, lacking emotional articulation of the situation.

    ChatGPT vs Gemini: Educational Initiatives

    • ChatGPT: OpenAI is far ahead in this regard. It is making serious inroads into integrating its AI tools into higher education with initiatives like ChatGPT Edu and many partnerships with universities. This potentially makes ChatGPT the best AI assistant for educators, students, researchers, and educational institutions.
    • Gemini: Google’s conversational AI tool is also very useful for educational purposes. Its integration with Google Workspace is excellent for general productivity tasks like document creation, collaboration, etc. However, its application to educational tasks is in a more broad sense and not directive-powered, as in the case of ChatGPT.

Performance with real prompts in creative writing (free versions tested):

Prompt: “Write a short poem that is likely to be written by a brilliant human poet as his swan song, facing an existential crisis in a world where AI has come to take over all creative tasks.”

ChatGPT: This poem seems more intricate, demonstrating a creative rhythm that seems unlikely for a machine.

Gemini:  Art is relative, but the poem generated by Google’s digital assistant again betrays a sense of algorithmic generation with its repetitive structure. Also, Gemini failed to give it a title.

ChatGPT vs Gemini: UX and UI

The Light & Dark Modes of ChatGPT
The Light & Dark Modes of ChatGPT

When we compare ChatGPT and Gemini’s user interfaces and user experiences, we see that these two have different strengths and offerings.

    • ChatGPT: In terms of UI, it offers a clean interface and sidebar, easy toggling between different GPT versions, dark/light mode, etc. In terms of UX, this AI model is smooth and fast, offering consistent performance across devices, and has clear separation of tools in the Pro version. On the whole, ChatGPT is better for simplicity and tool modularity in this regard.
    • Gemini: When it comes to UI, this AI model follows Google’s Material Design principles, has a Google-integrated sidebar, rich media previews, and more formats for visual responses. Its UX benefits from its integration with the larger Google ecosystem and its support for video and audio inputs. In comparison, it is faster but less fluid than ChatGPT and also features fewer customization options.

ChatGPT vs Gemini: Performance & Popularity

When it comes to performance and popularity of ChatGPT vs Gemini, ChatGPT is the clear winner, and numbers back it up.

    • ChatGPT gets roughly 37x the amount of monthly visitors compared to Google’s digital assistant.
    • The best AI assistant, if you look at the market share of Generative AI chatbots, ChatGPT held an overwhelming 59.7% in March 2025. Google’s Gemini came in third with 13.5%, falling behind Microsoft Copilot in second place.
    • ChatGPT again emerges as the best AI assistant if you consider the most downloaded generative AI mobile apps worldwide, with 40+ million downloads in January 2025. China’s DeepSeek came in second with 17.5 million, while Gemini ranked third with 9.6 million downloads.
    • In 2024, global consumer spending on generative AI apps hit nearly $1.3 billion, up from $455 million in 2023. Here, ChatGPT is the best AI assistant again, with almost 40% of this spending being directed toward it. It also accounted for 23% of all generative AI app downloads in 2024.

Users worldwide prefer OpenAI’s offering because it can handle long tasks, remember past interactions, and provide insightful and even humorous responses.
