Artificial intelligence (AI) is synonymous with business and institutions today, mostly for familiar reasons such as improved productivity and cost efficiency. From a time when there were only speculations regarding AI among the masses, there has been a huge wave of adoption of AI tools. Usage and development of AI has surged, while deliberations regarding its future are also rife. This boom in AI broadly started in November 2022, just after the launch of ChatGPT.  Google was quick to launch Gemini (then Bard) in 2023. ChatGPT vs Gemini has also been a recurrent theme of discussion since then.

In 2024, Gemini and ChatGPT have grown to become household names, yet some level of uncertainty or ignorance could exist regarding which one you could use. In this blog, we have highlighted a few strengths, differences, and drawbacks of both AI chatbots to help you make a conscious choice!

    Key Takeaways

    • ChatGPT vs Gemini is a common concern of interest in the AI landscape.
    • Gemini and ChatGPT are based on multimodal language models.
    • Technically, both have different strengths and weaknesses based on their latest versions.
    • One can choose either one or both depending on preferences, reasons for usage and functionalities.

    Understanding Gemini and ChatGPT

Before getting directly to ChatGPT vs Gemini, let me briefly explain both. Gemini and ChatGPT, based on large language models, were released just a few months apart. Since 2022, many more generative AI language models have cropped up, but Gemini and ChatGPT continue to be in focus globally.

    ChatGPT

OpenAI, the firm behind ChatGPT, sprung into the media glare when it launched the first version of its generative AI models, the GPT-3.5. Currently, GPT-4o is the default in ChatGPT’s free version, while OpenAI has also launched other large language models, including the DALL-E (text-to-image model) and Sora (text-to-video) models. ChatGPT Plus, the paid version, charges $20 a month.

    Gemini

Google announced the launch of Bard in 2023 as a likely counter to ChatGPT. The generative AI chatbot, along with ChatGPT, started a buzz of a possible ‘AI Arms Race’ kicking off globally. An interview with Microsoft’s (the majority shareholder of OpenAI) CEO, Satya Nadella, claiming to make Google ‘dance’ made headlines. Subsequently, Google DeepMind developed a new multimodal language model known as Gemini, which subsumed Bard.

Gemini (1.5 Flash) is the default for the free version, while Gemini Advanced (1.5 pro) is the latest version for paid users (charging $19.99 a month).

    ChatGPT vs Gemini

Here’s a comparative approach to ChatGPT vs Gemini based on various factors:

Responses: The exact same text prompts on both Gemini and ChatGPT yields two contrasting answers. As we can see below, Gemini responds in greater depth, while ChatGPT sticks to a brief paragraph. Based on these outcomes, we could deduce that Gemini is far more descriptive in its responses, which could come in handy in areas like research.

Voice Mode: ChatGPT’s recent update with its Advanced Voice Mode has made the feature seamless, with natural-sounding voices in various languages and faster processing times. The voice feature in Gemini is comparatively much more rigid, with the functionality tilting only towards transcription. Project Astra is an ongoing development to improve this feature, but Google hasn’t yet announced anything about its launch.

Generation of Images:  Both AI chatbots can generate images, but Gemini also does it for free. Since Gemini is integrated with Google Search, prompts on the chatbot can also retrieve pictures from Google Search results, a feature that is absent on ChatGPT.

Data Analysis: Although both Gemini and ChatGPT can analyze any data you feed it, ChatGPT offers an exclusive Data Analyst GPT for detailed interpretations, pictorial representations, and direct file conversions from one format to another.

Integrations: As an Android user, you could find Gemini more useful, considering it is integrated with all Google Apps like Maps, YouTube, Drive, Gmail, etc., which enables direct sharing and exporting to Google Workspace. ChatGPT is equally up to date in this regard, albeit in a different way.

Gemini vs ChatGPT: Which one fares better?

ChatGPT vs Gemini forms the crux of deliberations among AI aficionados. It leads to a much more nuanced explanation, with no single winner. Moreover, with regular updates in language models, there are constant advancements in both AI chatbots.

As far as the latest versions of Gemini and ChatGPT are concerned, both have their pros and cons. Gemini scores better in descriptive responses and integration with Google Apps (which could also be a drawback since it has no integrations with other ecosystems except Google) but falls behind in Voice Mode.

On the other hand, ChatGPT excels in maintaining context throughout interactions, allowing for more coherent dialogues. Its advanced back-and-forth dialogue capability makes interactions feel relatively much more natural, while its image and video generators have also received acclaim.

The ChatGPT vs Gemini debate will continue to gain new considerations as they move towards closing the gaps in their respective functionalities. The generative AI Landscape is set to get much more competitive!
