For as long as I can remember, using Google has been a predictable process. We type in a query, get back that classic list of ten blue links, and then start the scavenger hunt – bouncing between tabs to find a complete answer. We’ve all been there.

But that ritual is about to change.

Google just rolled out its new AI search experience in India via Search Labs platform, and from my perspective, this is a major, major shift in how we find information – the biggest since the beginning of Google itself.

So, what does this new AI-powered search actually do? And is it poised to finally cure our habit of opening 30+ tabs? I’ve been digging into it, and I’m here to explain what I’ve learned and why this is more than just hype.

    Key Takeaways

    • Google’s new AI Mode has transformed traditional keyword-based queries into conversational experiences by integrating generative AI directly into the search process. Conversational AI chat has never been easier.
    • Rather than listing links, it now offers an AI Overview, or AI-powered summaries, while simultaneously attaching links for further verification.
    • The new feature can be accessed by navigating through Search Labs in the Google app, and toggling the “Labs” flask icon.
    • The new mode excels in real-time information retrieval.

What is Google’s New AI Mode?

    Introducing Google’s Ai Mode
    Source AI-generated | Introducing Google’s Game-Changing Move

At its core, Google’s new AI mode is a conversational, generative AI layer built directly into your search results. Powered by Google’s advanced Gemini family of models, it aims to do the heavy lifting for you. Instead of giving you the ingredients (links) and telling you to cook, it serves you a fully prepared meal (a synthesized summary) while also showing you the recipe (the source links).

    Here’s what makes Google’s new AI mode a game-changer:

    1. Ask it Anything: You can throw complex multi-step questions at it that would have previously required a dozen separate searches. The AI will process complex prompts and generate a comprehensive summary, complete with suggestions, and even links to sites: it’s generative AI for dummies!
    2. It’s Multimodal: This means that the new AI mode understands different types of input. You can now:
    • Use your voice to ask conversational questions.
    • Use your camera (via Google Lens) to utilize “image search for people”.

This seamless integration of text, voice, and vision is a cornerstone of the experience.

    1. AI Overviews with Live Links: When you perform a search that triggers the multimodal AI, you’ll see a shaded box at the very top – the “AI Overview.” This is a summary generated from multiple high-quality web sources. Crucially, it includes carousels of links, allowing you to click through and verify the information or dive deeper. This is a key feature of Google’s new AI mode, ensuring transparency.
    2. Conversational Follow-ups: The search doesn’t end with just one answer. Below the AI Overview, you’ll find suggested follow-up questions. It turns a static search into an ongoing conversation, helping you refine and explore a topic without starting over.

How to Enable Google’s New AI Mode

Getting access is simple as it’s part of Google Search Labs, a programme for testing new features.

    1. Open the Google App: Make sure your Google app on Android or iOS is updated.
    2. Find the Labs Icon: Tap on the flask-shaped “Labs” icon in the top-left corner of the app.
    3. Toggle it On: You’ll see several experimental features. Search for ‘AI Mode’ and turn it on.
    4. You’re in! The next time you search, you may see the new AI-powered results for relevant queries.

The Google AI Mode launch is being rolled out progressively, so if you don’t see it immediately, check back in a few days.

Google’s AI Mode vs. ChatGPT vs. Bing AI

The AI space is getting crowded. So, how does Google’s new AI mode stack up against the other big names?

FeatureGoogle’s New AI ModeChatGPT (OpenAI)Microsoft Copilot (Bing AI)
Primary SourceSearch Augmentation: To answer your questions with live, up-to-the-minute information from the web.Task & Content Generation: To be a creative partner, write code, draft emails, and have deep conversations.Integrated Assistant: To be an AI companion across the Microsoft ecosystem (Windows, Edge, Office).
Data SourceLive Google Index: Access to the entire real-time internet. Its biggest strength.Static Dataset (Free Version): Trained on data up to a certain point. Web browsing is a premium feature.Live Bing Index: Access to the real-time internet, powered by Bing search.
Key DifferentiatorDeep integration with Google Search, Maps, Lens, and the Android ecosystem.Unmatched conversational ability and creative prowess in text generation.Deep integration into the Windows OS and Microsoft 365 apps.

In short, Google’s new AI mode is for finding and understanding things in the real world, right now. ChatGPT is for creating and brainstorming in a self-contained environment. CoPilot is your Microsoft-native productivity buddy. The recent Google AI mode launch firmly places Google as a leader in real-time AI-powered information retrieval.

What the Google AI Mode Means FOR YOU

This isn’t just a shiny new feature – it’s a fundamental shift with wide-ranging implications.

    For Users:

I’ve been using the new AI search, and here’s my honest take. The convenience is incredible; it saves me a ton of time.

However, I’ve found a few things to watch out for. First, the AI can get things wrong, so I make it a habit to click the source links to verify the facts. Second, it’s easy to become a lazy thinker, so I remind myself to question the summaries.

Finally, I’m more aware of my privacy. It feels like I’m sharing my entire thought process, not just a few words. It’s a powerful assistant, but I know I still need to be the one in charge of my thinking.

    For Creators, Businesses, and SEO:

I’ve seen first-hand how Google’s AI Overviews are changing the game for website owners. When a user gets their answer directly from the AI, they have no reason to visit our sites, which puts our traffic and revenue at risk.

From my experience, this means we have to pivot our entire SEO strategy. The goal is no longer just to hit the first page. The new goal is to become the trusted source the AI wants to quote. This means I now focus on creating content so clear and authoritative that Google sees it as the definitive answer. It’s no longer about keywords; it’s about becoming the undeniable expert.

    For the Future of Information:

Essentially, we’re watching search evolve from grunting keywords at a box (“cheap ramen good”) to having a proper, polite conversation. This tech is the super-smart descendant of voice assistants like Google Assistant, which now look like the awkward teen phase of conversational AI.

The Google AI mode launch isn’t just another update; it’s a glimpse into a future where the line between asking a machine and asking a human expert gets so blurry, you might soon find yourself asking your microwave for its opinion on your life choices.

    Final Thoughts

I’ve been using Google’s new AI, and to me it feels like they’re betting everything on a new idea: that search should be a conversation.

It’s still in its “new intern phase”, so don’t be surprised by some odd answers. As for the classic blue links we all know? They’re no longer the star of the show. The old Google is still there, but a very fast-talking assistant has taken the lead.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

    What is an AI Overview?

It’s a boxed summary you’ll see at the top of most search results. It gives you a quick, smart answer, with attached website links.

Can I speak or take photos without typing?

Absolutely! Since the new AI mode is multimodal, you can ask questions using voice and search by simply using  an image.

Is the new mode the same as ChatGPT?

Not quite. Google’s AI Mode is about helping you search smarter, with real-time web access. On the other hand, ChatGPT is more suitable for creating content and answering questions from pre-learned knowledge.

Is my data safe with conversational AI?

That’s a smart question. Just know that when you use this new mode, you’re not just searching, you’re basically chatting. Your search style becomes part of what Google knows. While Google has privacy policies in mind, it’s good to be mindful about what you ask.

Can I trust the AI answers completely?

Not always. While it’s powerful, AI can occasionally “hallucinate”, or give incorrect responses. Always double-check with the source links included in the overview.
