I deleted two photo editing apps off my phone last month before I landed on the two that I thought were perfect for me. For many people, the best photo editing apps for iPhone are how they rank by download count or affiliate payout, not by what survives a real edit.

I run a small photo-heavy Instagram account and edit on my phone almost every week. So I tested a bunch of apps through the same set of test shots (a backlit portrait, a flat-light product photo, and a night shot with noise) and kept the score.

In this post we’ll get to know about the best photo editing apps for iPhone, how I tested those apps, and definitely how I chose the right one.

    Key Takeaways

    • Best overall: Adobe Lightroom Mobile, if you shoot RAW or ProRAW and want real color control.
    • Best free pick: Snapseed is free with no ads and no in-app purchases.
    • Best value specialist: TouchRetouch, a $1.99 to $4.99 one-job app that beats bundled tools in every suite I tried.
    • The spending rule: Most people don’t need a subscription. But if you really want to, then pay only for RAW volume, client work, or generative AI at scale.
    • Watch the math: Lightroom’s cheapest plan runs $11.99/month, which is $143.88/year.

How I Tested These iPhone Photo Editing Apps

I edited the same three photos in every app on an iPhone 15 Pro running the latest iOS, scoring each on how good the masking feature is, its export quality, speed to a finished photo, and whether the price matched what you actually get.

One thing is very important to know, that a lot of the best app content in this space comes from sites that sell presets for the exact app they’re recommending. Now that’s not wrong, but it’s a conflict of interest you must know before reading one.

The 10 Best Photo Editing Apps for iPhone in 2026

Ranked by what each one delivers against its price.

Adobe Lightroom Mobile: Best overall for serious editors

My personal favorite is Lightroom. Because its free tier already includes masking, healing, and full RAW support. The paid plan adds cloud storage and a few AI tools that most people never need, even though the cheapest plan still runs $11.99/month, or $143.88 a year.

Skip the subscription unless you need cross-device sync. Skip the app entirely if the interface intimidates you; it’s built for people who already know how the curve works.

Snapseed: Best free photo editing app for iPhone

Snapseed hasn’t had a major redesign in years, but the toolset overpowers any other editor apps. It’s completely free with no ads and no in-app purchases, and the selective adjustment, healing, and curves tools still beat most paid apps on this list. The interface looks dated next to VSCO or Picsart. If that bothers you more than saving money, look elsewhere.

VSCO: Best for film looks and a consistent feed

VSCO’s presets give you a recognizable, cohesive aesthetic interface, which is the whole point if you’re building a personal brand. Plus runs $9.99/month or $39.99/year, and Pro runs $14.99/month or $69.99/year.

But keep in mind that you’re paying for a look and a community feed here, not editing precision. Professional features like curves and masking lag way behind Lightroom and Snapseed, so skip it if pixel-level control matters more than aesthetic consistency.

Photomator: Best native iPhone editing experience

Photomator comes from the Apple-owned Pixelmator team, and it shows in how well it integrates with Shortcuts and iOS widgets. Pricing is $34.99/year or $119 as a one-time lifetime purchase, which is cheaper than a single year of Lightroom’s paid plan. The only trade-off is a thinner preset and tutorial ecosystem than Adobe or VSCO offer.

Darkroom: Best for speed and a fair billing model

Darkroom’s most interesting feature is its pricing. It comes with a free tier plus a pay-only-when-you-export model instead of a flat monthly fee. The best part is that it can edit videos and photos and also stays fast on older phones. But the stock of generative AI tricks is less than Adobe or Picsart, so heavy AI users should look somewhere else.

Picsart: Best all-in-one for AI and social media content

Picsart’s Pro tier comes with about $10.50/month billed annually with 500 AI credits, and Ultra runs $45/month or roughly $31.66/month annually with 1,500 credits. It functions more like a content factory with an editor attached than a dedicated photo editor. Has a huge set of backgrounds, stickers, templates, and generative fill.

Great for social creators who need volume. But if you just want to fix a single photo, the cluttered interface and credit-based limits might frustrate you.

Facetune: Best for portraits and selfies

Facetune’s retouching tools handle skin, reshaping, and blemish removal well. But the pricing is a bit aggressive. Comes with a $25/month, $40 per quarter, or $77.99/year, with the monthly option priced to push you toward the annual plan.

Almost nobody should choose the monthly plan here. And this isn’t the app for landscape or product photography.

TouchRetouch: Best for removing unwanted objects

TouchRetouch does one job, removing objects, people, and blemishes from a photo, and does it better than the equivalent tool bundled into any all-in-one suite I tested. Pricing ranges from $1.99 to $49.99 depending on the tier, with a one-off purchase available well under $5. A narrow, cheap app that beats broader $60-a-year suites at its one job is the best value pick on this entire list. It does nothing else, so you’ll still need a second app for color and light.

Afterlight: Best for quick edits, textures, and light leaks

Afterlight’s film textures, grain, and light leak overlays give any photo character, too, within a minute. But it has a catch: its regional App Store listing shows a strong 4.8-star rating but just more than 450+ ratings total, a much smaller sample than Snapseed or VSCO carry. Treat it as a tool for quick creative edits, not a primary editor. Technical correction tools are noticeably thinner than the rest of this list.

Adobe Photoshop (Mobile): Best for layers and generative fill

Photoshop’s iPhone app includes Generative Fill and Generative Expand within the free tier. But a paid plan at $7.99/month or $69.99/year unlocks cloud sync and the iPad version.

Most people who say they want Photoshop on my phone actually want Lightroom’s simpler, adjustment-based workflow. Photoshop’s layer-based model is an overkill unless you’re editing multiple images. And it has the steepest learning curve.

Free vs. Paid iPhone Photo Editing Apps: What’s Actually Worth Paying For

In my opinion, for most people, Snapseed’s free toolset is the best for real editing needs.

Paying for a subscription only makes sense in three specific cases:

    • You shoot RAW or ProRAW at volume: Lightroom or Photomator outruns the others, and Photomator’s $119 lifetime price is lower than one year of Lightroom’s cheapest plan.
    • You’re editing for clients: Facetune’s retouching depth and Picsart’s template library save real time on repeat work.
    • You need generative AI at scale: Picsart and Photoshop both offer it free at a basic level, but heavy use burns through credits or nudges you toward the paid tier fast.

How to Choose the Right Photo Editing App for Your iPhone

Match the app to your actual workflow:

    • Casual sharing, no budget: Snapseed plus TouchRetouch.
    • Building a consistent personal feed: VSCO for polish, Afterlight for character.
    • Portraits and selfies: Facetune, used carefully.
    • RAW or ProRAW work you take seriously: Lightroom Mobile or Photomator.
    • High-volume social content with AI tools: Picsart.
    • Composite or advanced layer work: Photoshop Mobile.

If you’ve already paid for a subscription you rarely open, that’s the clearest sign you picked based on hype, not on your actual workflow.

    Final Thoughts

How many apps you run matters more than which single one is best. A lean two-app stack, one free precision editor plus one cheap specialist, beats one bloated all-in-one subscription almost every time.

But my stack is Lightroom for the everyday edit and anything shot in RAW. On-device AI is also closing the gap between free and paid tiers faster than most people realize, which means the free apps on this list matter more heading into next year, not less.

    FAQs

What’s the best free photo editing app for iPhone?

Snapseed. No ads or in-app purchases, and its selective editing, healing, and curves tools are as good as or better than paid tools.

Which photo editing app do professionals use on iPhone?

Lightroom Mobile and Photomator, mostly for RAW and ProRAW workflows. Both offer selective masking and real color grading control that lighter apps like VSCO don’t match.

Are paid iPhone photo editing apps worth it over free ones?

Under special circumstances: heavy RAW shooting, client-based retouching, or extensive use of generative AI. But for casual editing, any cheap professional app such as TouchRetouch will do the job, and Snapseed will do most of the job.

Can you edit RAW photos on an iPhone?

Yes. Newer iPhones (iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, and 6S Plus) are the only phones that support ProRAW files; the native Photos app, Lightroom Mobile, and Photomator all support it with a range of manual controls, with Lightroom and Photomator providing the deepest manual controls.

What’s the best app for portraits and selfies?

Facetune, for skin and feature retouching. Use it lightly: it’s easy to over-process a portrait into looking artificial, especially on the higher retouch settings.
