Microsoft has officially announced that it will discontinue support for its Remote Desktop app for Windows on May 27, 2025. Users who rely on the app to connect to cloud services such as Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box must transition to the Windows app before this date. After May 27, connections through the Remote Desktop app will be blocked, and Microsoft will no longer provide updates or support.

    Key Takeaways

    • Microsoft is ending support for the Remote Desktop app on May 27, 2025.
    • Users must switch to the Windows app to access Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box.
    • The Windows app offers enhanced features such as multi-monitor support and dynamic display scaling.
    • Remote Desktop Connection will still be available for certain remote access needs.
    • Microsoft is addressing feature gaps in the Windows app, with updates expected over time.

    Transition to the Windows App

The Windows app is Microsoft’s recommended replacement for the Remote Desktop app. It includes various improvements such as a streamlined interface, multi-monitor compatibility, dynamic display scaling, and customizable home screens. These upgrades aim to provide a better user experience while ensuring seamless connectivity to cloud-based Windows services.

Users can download the Windows app from the Microsoft Store or Microsoft’s official website. Microsoft has also provided documentation to help users migrate efficiently, to ensure minimal disruption to their workflows.

Remote Desktop App Blocked for Cloud Services

From May 27, 2025, the Remote Desktop app will no longer allow connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Microsoft Dev Box. Users who attempt to connect via the old application will receive an error message, as Microsoft is fully transitioning support to the Windows app. While some local remote access functionalities may still work if the Remote Desktop app is installed before the deadline, no future updates or bug fixes will be provided.

    Alternative Options for Remote Access

For users who require remote access features that are not yet available in the Windows app, Microsoft recommends using Remote Desktop Connection or RemoteApp and Desktop Connection. These services allow users to connect to remote desktops and remote desktop services, so those who depend on specific functionalities not yet included in the Windows app still have reliable alternatives.

Microsoft has stated that it is actively working on expanding the Windows app’s feature set, but in the meantime, these alternative options provide an interim solution for affected users.

    IT Administrators Should Prepare

Organizations using the app should start preparing for the transition as soon as possible. IT administrators should review Microsoft’s guidelines on migration, update internal documentation, and communicate the changes to employees. Businesses that rely heavily on remote access should conduct testing to ensure a smooth transition to the Windows app. Companies should provide training for employees to familiarize them with the new app’s interface and features.

Microsoft’s Plans for the Windows App

Although the Windows app currently lacks some features of the Remote Desktop app, Microsoft is working to bridge these gaps through future updates. The company has acknowledged missing functionalities, including personal account support and certain remote desktop services, and has committed to rolling out improvements over time. Users are encouraged to check Microsoft’s official resources regularly for updates on the Windows app’s development.

    The Bottom Line

With the Remote Desktop app being phased out, Microsoft is urging users to migrate to the Windows app as soon as possible. Those who rely on Azure Virtual Desktop or Microsoft Dev Box should complete the transition before May 27, 2025, to ensure uninterrupted access.

While some features are still in development, Microsoft is actively working to enhance the Windows app, making it the primary tool for remote desktop services moving forward. Users and businesses that prepare ahead of time will benefit from a smoother transition and continued access to critical remote work solutions.
