In 2025, even though HMD’s new Barbie flip phone is making headlines, Nokia was the OG in creating weird phones. From bizarre shapes to unconventional keypads, Nokia’s designs were truly one-of-a-kind. Here’s a look at 10 of the weirdest and most unique phones they ever made.
While it was king, Nokia made an astounding number of unique phones of all sizes and colors. While some old Nokia phones were iconic and went on to become the most popular handsets of their time, others were simply too weird. There was the iconic Nokia 6600, of course, famously dubbed the Nokia egg phone. But there was a lot more to Nokia than just its egg shaped phone.
Yaabot takes you through the 10 weirdest old Nokia phones ever made.
#10 – Nokia 7610
Launched in 2004, the Nokia 7610 had one hell of a keyboard layout. Featuring a shape that was crossed between a rectangle and an ellipse, the 7610 had its keys placed in rather unusual fashion across its body.
I personally remember having trouble finding the menu key on a number of early occasions. Clearly a contender for the weirdest phone title, this one, with its eccentric design elements, giving it a weird Nokia phone vibe.
#9 – Nokia N-Gage
Released in 2003, I remember being fascinated by N-Gage – primarily because it was a gaming phone. The N-Gage’s display resolution of 176 x 208 pixels was the best at its time. The phone required you to hold it in a unique (or rather, silly) way when making calls – perpendicular to your ears!
It took me a while to realize this was a requirement rather than a style statement. The phone bombed, of course. But remained as one of the more crazy phones to remember for the ages.
#8 – Nokia 6800
The Nokia 6800 brought with itself a hybrid keypad – featuring both a QWERTY and a normal keypad. Additionally, it had GPRS support, and a whopping 5 MB of memory. And its design was perhaps the predecessor to the QWERTY phones of the future, making it a subtle precursor to the list of crazy phone models that would follow.
#7 – Nokia 7370
A standard phone with standard features – except that it featured a display that could swing 180 degrees. More weird than unique – you could spin it and cover the keypad, reducing this unusual Nokia phone’s length by half. With flowery designs all over it, this was one of the most unique phones that doubled as a fashion accessory.
#6 – Nokia 7900 Prism
Featuring a pixel density of 200ppi, this phone was well ahead of competition for 2007 levels. I remember having a high level of admiration for the 7900 – thanks to its unique ‘prism’ design. The keys were arranged in a triangular design. Even better – you could change the color of the keypad backlight. Pretty cool design for those times and its interesting reputation as a weird Nokia phone. Thanks Nokia.
#5 – Nokia N90
The first phone in the N-series, the N90 was one of the most memorable old Nokia phones which had two displays on either side of its body. It also had a unique camcorder look (that was replicated in the N93).
#4 – Nokia 3650
Released in 2003, the Nokia 3650 was among the first old Nokia phones with a camera. It came with a dazzling 3.4 MB of memory, and the most weird looking keyboard I’ve ever seen on a Nokia. This unusually shaped device sold for about $400 at launch.
#3 – Nokia 7600
If you thought the 3650 had a weird keyboard, the 7600 should blow your mind. Aside from the irregularly placed keys, the phone also had its receiver at an uncomfortable position, which meant you had to hold it slanted to your ear in order to take calls. And of course, it was so tough to hold in one hand too! Definitely one of the weirdest phones ever made.
#2 – Nokia 7700
It looks like Nokia saved most of its unusual designs for its ‘7-series’ phones. 6 of the 10 phones on the list are 7-series handsets.
Anyway, the 7700 always reminds me of a GameBoy Advance. It’s hard to say if it this 2003 touchscreen phone would’ve been a success among gamers because of two reasons – one, it was targeted at business users. And two, it was never released.
#1 – Nokia 7280
The 7280’s was one of the most unique phones ever made. Pay closer attention – there’s no keypad, and there’s no touchscreen either! So how do you operate this thing? By the navigation wheel in the center – something like the early BlackBerrys, similar to the original iPod.
Of course it wasn’t convenient – every small task, right from setting an alarm to sending a text message involved using the wheel to go through every letter and every configuration. No wonder the phone didn’t sell well.
The Bottom Line
These unique phones by Nokia prove that the company was never afraid to experiment with crazy phones that pushed the boundaries of design. From the weirdest phones like the 7280 to the unique designs of the 7370, Nokia has left behind a legacy of innovation. Old Nokia phones may look weird to the younger generations, but ask any person born before 2000, and you’ll know just what an impact these crazy phones had!
