PlayStation Plus has been around for many years now. Almost everyone in the gaming industry has at least a vague idea of what it is. The general idea is that it is a kind of subscription service similar to your Netflix and Prime Video plans. Which is true in a broader sense, but not entirely….

It is much more than just access to a few games each month; it also offers a range of other benefits. And, since its introduction in 2010, it has only improved its features, added more tiers, and enhanced just about every aspect. All of this has enabled Sony to sustain this service as one of the best in the industry, despite intense competition from rivals such as Xbox Game Pass.

But what is PlayStation Plus? What does it offer? How to get it?

All these pertinent questions need to be answered. And in this PlayStation Plus guide, I’ll explain everything there is to know about it – how it works, what services are offered, the different plans, and more!

    Key Leanings

    • PlayStation Plus is Sony’s subscription service, launched in 2010, that gives access to monthly games, online multiplayer, and other features.
    • There are three major membership plans, each with additional benefits and higher fees, which you need to manage carefully.
    • It is most suitable for new owners and online players, but challenges such as rising prices and the falling quality of the PlayStation Plus catalog limit its appeal.
    • Currently, it is holding its own among competitors, and in the future, we will likely see the PlayStation Plus catalog and prices further refined.

PlayStation Plus Explained: The Concept And Its Origins

Before we dive into the rest of the content, let’s first understand the basics.

    What is PlayStation Plus?

Simply put, it is a subscription service offered by Sony for its PlayStation consoles that provides access to a library of monthly video games, additional cloud storage, exclusive perks, and more. So, in short, it is similar to our Netflix subscription, where we pay a fee and receive benefits.

The service, available on PS4 and PS5, offers 2-3 monthly games and online multiplayer. The former lets you install and play the curated games every month, and the latter lets you play online with other players who own the service.

    The history of PlayStation Plus

The service was initially launched as part of Sony’s unified online network, the PlayStation Network (PSN). This premium service offered additional benefits beyond the PSN’s free ones. This was in support of Sony’s at the time latest offering, PS3.

PlayStation Plus was launched as a part of Sony’s PSN.

While it initially offered benefits such as exclusive discounts and complimentary games, it has since expanded to include additional benefits. These have been aligned with the introduction of newer consoles like PS4 and PS5 and the phasing out of PS3.

In June 2022, it’s subscription service was revamped to launch the current three-tiered subscription model. The highest tier has retained the ‘PlayStation Plus Premium’ name, but in regions where cloud streaming of old-gen games is unavailable, this feature is called ‘Deluxe’ and offers all benefits except that.

    Benefits of PlayStation Plus

Now that we have a more than basic idea of what it is, let’s understand all the benefits that it offers to subscribers:

    • Monthly Games: The primary offering of this service is 2-3 monthly games available for download and play – across all tiers with access to curated Sony games.
    • Games and Classics Catalog: While the Games catalog contains newer games, both AAA console games and the Classics Catalog (exclusive to Deluxe Tier) contain several iconic games.
    • Online Multiplayer: Online Multiplayer allows you to team up with other players to play online modes in video games.
    • Share Play: Share Play lets you and your friends play the same game, continue your progress, and experience it together, provided they also have the membership.
    • Exclusive benefits: Certain perks like exclusive game packs and discounts are only available with a PlayStation Plus subscription.
    • Other benefits: Another offering is Cloud Storage, usually 100GB, which can be used for a variety of purposes. You also get access to game trials and demos for several titles.

Who Is PlayStation Plus Good For?

Now that you know what it all offers, the following are the few customer groups that I think the PlayStation Plus Subscription is suitable for:

PlayStation Plus is an excellent choice for new PlayStation console owners.
Source | PlayStation Plus is an excellent choice for new PlayStation console owners.
    • New Console owners: They can use this service to instantly access a wide range of games without buying everything separately.
    • Online Gamers: They need this service because it unlocks Online Multiplayer and adds perks like Cloud Storage and discounts.
    • Serious gamers: They can benefit from the steady flow of new titles and a large game library.
    • Casual gamers: If you rarely play, getting free monthly games with the Essential tier will be great!

PlayStation Plus: Impact On The Gaming Community

Now, inevitably, it has had a huge impact on the gaming industry and online communities. So, the following points highlight the same:

    • The case for Online Multiplayer: For online multiplayer modes, it promotes interconnectedness and enhances security. However, the paywall acts as a barrier for players who are on a budget.
    • Exposure for Indie games: With a PlayStation Plus subscription, indie games and smaller titles are recognized when they are included in the service, rather than just listed on the PlayStation Store.
    • Increased convenience and security: It eliminates the hassles of purchasing physical CDs for the games. However, the latest titles aren’t available and must be purchased physically or digitally via the PlayStation Store.
    • Concerns over worthiness: While most of the impact of this addition has been positive, there have also been concerns about the service’s quality-to-cost ratio.

    PlayStation Plus: Drawbacks and Criticisms

While it may look like the perfect subscription for gamers, especially given its benefits, it is still not devoid of challenges and criticisms:

    • High costs and limited value: Many users feel the Extra and Deluxe tiers are too costly, and the Essential tier doesn’t offer enough benefits for its cost.
    • Not suited for all players: Gamers who prefer single-player titles or play occasionally often don’t find the subscription appealing.
    • Mixed game catalog quality: Users have raised concerns about the overall quality of games added to the PlayStation Plus catalog in recent years.
    • PS3 games are stream-only: Yup! This means the older PS3 titles can’t be downloaded. You have to rely on cloud streaming, which is restricted to the Deluxe tier and affects performance for many players.

    PlayStation Plus: Membership Plans

Sony is currently offering three major membership plans: Essential, Extra, and Premium/Deluxe. All three plans offer the core benefits; some features are exclusive to individual plans, depending on their prices. For example, you get exclusive access to classic games with the PlayStation Plus Premium plan. The following tables showcase the prices and features offered:

    Managing Your Subscription

Now that we know what this service is all about, let’s understand how to avail of it and how to cancel a PlayStation Plus subscription.

How to Sign Up for PlayStation Plus?

The process of signing up for a PlayStation Plus subscription is simple and involves a few key steps:

    • Log in to your PlayStation account on your PS4 or PS4. You can do the same on other devices, such as smartphones or Tablets, by installing the PlayStation App.
    • Now, on your PS4 or PS5, scroll right and click on the PlayStation Plus icon. On other devices, you need to scroll to the bottom centre and open the PlayStation Store.
    • Now you will have the three available plans. Choose the most suitable one.
    • Lastly, regardless of the device, you have to complete the purchase process, involving paying for the subscription.

How to Cancel the PlayStation Plus subscription?

Similar to signing up, cancelling your existing subscription is easy and involves just a few steps:

    • On PS4: Go to Settings, select PlayStation Plus, select Manage Membership, and select Subscription. Lastly, select the Cancel Subscription option.
    • On PS5: Go to Settings, then PlayStation Plus, Manage Membership, and select Subscription. Select Cancel Subscription to cancel your existing plan.
    • Via PlayStation Website: Go to the official website, select your profile icon, then click Subscriptions management. Then, find your PlayStation Plus subscription, click Cancel, and confirm it.

    Important Considerations

Now that you are familiar with the process of signing up and cancelling your subscription, the following points highlight key considerations for managing your subscription effectively.

    • You should understand that there are three major plans available for PlayStation Plus subscription, so make an informed decision after evaluating your needs.
    • The subscription is also set for auto-renewal, and if you do not want it, you need to disable the option. This will prevent your money from being debited automatically,
    • Even if you cancel your service before the billing period ends, you will continue to receive the benefits till the last day.
    • You need to be 7 years or older to create a PlayStation Account and be eligible for the PlayStation Plus subscription.

You should keep these in mind at all times!

PlayStation Plus Vs. Xbox Game Pass vs Nintendo Switch Online

Now, while PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Store, and everything that Sony offers are considered to be among the best in the industry. There are alternatives available from Microsoft’s big move in the form of the Xbox and Nintendo’s Switch.

So, here’s how PlayStation Plus compares with others:

    The Future Ahead

I believe that at this point, PlayStation Plus is not going anywhere and is likely to stay with more upcoming innovations and benefits:

    • Shift to PS5 games: As we approach the inevitable release of PS6, PlayStation Plus will start offering PS5 games as its primary games and will gradually phase out PS4 content.
    • Core benefits remain stable: While it’s very likely that additional perks will be included, the core offerings will remain as they are.
    • Cloud Gaming improvements: With the rise of cloud streaming and the success of PS Portal, it is likely Sony will continue to improve the quality of old-gen games to enhance the experience.
    • Subscription price reforms: Since many have questioned subscription price increases, we will likely see price changes in the future. Whether they will be positive, that is to see…

    Final Thoughts

Wrapping it up, I believe that PlayStation Plus is the best in the business. Not only does it offer various benefits, but the PlayStation Plus catalog is also vast and high-quality. So, if you are into PlayStation games, you should really give it a try (Go for the free trial!).

However, it is not perfect, and concerns about the price and quality of games persist. So, make sure you properly manage your subscription and avoid unnecessary losses.

To conclude, I think it’s a great service, and the offered benefits will likely provide you the best gaming experience – if you truly need them.

So again, make an informed decision before purchasing it!
