According to ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization), the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), India’s interplanetary mission recently completed 4 years of orbiting Mars, the Red Planet. Launched by the ISRO on 5th November, 2013, the mission successfully placed itself into Martian orbit on 24th September, 2014 on the first attempt. The Mars Orbiter Mission probe began from the First Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Andhra Pradesh. On 5th November, 2013, the launch took place through a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket C25 at 09:08 UTC. The probe spent approximately a month in the Earth’s orbit, before its trans-Mars injection…
The journey of human history has been one towards insignificance. As we have started to obtain more knowledge, we have pushed our planet downwards from the center of the universe to a big chunk of rock. A rock that orbits an average star, which is one among trillions in our galaxy. This makes sense of the fact that there may be infinite universes, which have come into existence and that which are still growing in their size. This theory has been referred to as the Multiverse Theory. Also Read: Could The Universe Be Made Up Of A Single Electron? As per…
Space trips away from our planet would require months or years of travel in the vacuum space. And for this, it is extremely essential to ensure the health of the travelling crew. Maintaining state-of-the-art life support systems can be expensive, and unreliable despite years of research. If space travelling crews could be induced to hibernation during space travel, many challenges could become easier to solve. How would it work? Hibernation is a type of state of physical and mental inactivity or reduced metabolism. It is caused when the body temperature is greatly below normal. However, unlike cryogenics, the body does…
From the beginning of the 20th century, researchers on non-human primates like chimpanzees and orangutangs have shown us that they are capable of many things that are considered completely human. For instance – empathising, making tools and forming friendships. But perhaps not morality. Humans however, can do more than just create and feel emotions. We have language, laws, and culture. For a long time, the most dominant explanation for these concepts was the intelligence of the human brain, which is three times larger than the chimpanzee brain. But in the recent years, scientists have also added that our more social nature has allowed…
On the Arctic Tundra in Svalbard, Norway, between Oslo and the North Pole, there are neither gardens nor trees. However, deep within this isolated surface lies the largest concentration of agricultural diversity of the world. The ‘Global Seed Vault’ headed by an American agriculturalist Cary Fowler heads this international effort with a team of experts safeguard the sources of the world’s food supply, one which has been designed to outlast any disaster, ultimately each and every one of us. A doomsday vault for humanity. Why keep all these seeds here? As the weather there is extremely cold, it helps in…
Apple may soon be coming out with some rather unexpected features on its iPhones. In May 2014, Apple filed for a patent that covered an iPhone drop protection system. Apple’s patent revealed, that future iPhones could recognise when the phone is about to be dropped, calculate an approximate point of contact and shift the centre of gravity of the phone in such a way that the sensitive parts of the phone are not affected due to the fall. The technology is built around sensors like the accelerometer, which can detect when a device is in a freefall. This patent was…
