Ever since AI became a prevalent part of our discussions, one question has always bugged most of us – Which jobs will AI replace? Regardless of the profession we belong to! One of the more prominent discussions has been about AI invading our entertainment industries, a move vehemently opposed by people worldwide, especially in Hollywood. So, what do you think the response would have been when an AI Production Studio announced the launch of an ‘AI actress’ known as Tilly Norwood?

Well… as you might have already guessed, no one liked it. Many actors voiced their displeasure across social media and in interviews. And it didn’t stop there – SAG-AFTRA, an actors’ labor union, released a statement condemning it. Online fans’ opinion? Absolutely supporting the actors, which was quite obvious!
So, in this blog, I’ll discuss everything there is to talk about, what exactly happened, what everyone said, what this all means, and more.
Firstly, What/Who is Tilly Norwood: The AI Actress Stirring Hollywood
Since all of ‘this’ is about Tilly Norwood, firstly, let’s discuss Who/What Tilly Norwood is. This will allow you to understand better why prominent industry names are reacting the way they are.
Simply put, Tilly Norwood is an AI actress.
But what does it mean?
It’s exactly what you might be thinking – it’s an AI created by Xicoia, an AI Talent Studio.
To be clear, she is not based on a real person. Tilly is a computer-generated character, similar to other AI creations we encounter online.
While most of us at home couldn’t replicate this level of realism on our laptops, it’s not a groundbreaking technological feat. It’s essentially the visual result of carefully crafted prompts, similar to what we see when generating images with tools like ChatGPT or Gemini.
At its core, Tilly represents AI-generated content at its most visual and public form. She is a fully computer-rendered persona being presented as a performer.
The Vision Behind Tilly Norwood: Xicoia’s AI Actress Project
The actress’s creator is Xicoia’s head, Eline Van der Velden, a Dutch writer, comedian, actress, and producer currently based in London. While she has worked on various British projects, few have gained as much attention as this venture.

And it all starts from the announcement of this ‘actress’ (if you can call it one), which wasn’t through social media, as one would expect. Instead, it was announced at the Zurich Film Festival in September 2025, particularly during a talk panel at the Zurich summit on the 27th.
And, as you would have already guessed, it instantly caused chatter among the journalists, as this wasn’t some upcoming actress.
In an exclusive interview with Deadline, she said, “We’re standing at the dawn of a new category – AI-powered celebrity IP. Xicoia’s mission is to shape it, own it, and set the creative standard. Just as the 20th century was defined by the rise of film stars and pop icons, we believe the 21st will be defined by synthetic talent.”
Her vision with Particle6 and now Xicoia involves AI personnel with human-like lifespans, backstories, and character evolution. All led by Tilly Norwood, who already has dedicated social media handles. In many ways, Tilly mirrors virtual influencers and digital celebrities, computer-generated personalities cultivating real fanbases. Xicoia appears to be pushing this concept into mainstream entertainment.

Hollywood Reacts to AI Actors and Tilly Norwood
No matter how revolutionary or future-coded the creator’s vision might seem, it still doesn’t take away from the fact that an AI character is taking away an actor’s job – and Hollywood saw right through this. The rise of AI in Hollywood has long been a hot topic, especially since studios began experimenting with digital doubles and automated performances. Tilly Norwood has simply reignited this old fire.
One of the earliest reactions voicing disapproval was from Mexican Actress Melissa Barrera, who famously starred as Lyn in the hit TV series Vida (2018- 2020). Sharing the Deadline article on her Instagram story, she wrote, “Hope all actors repped by the agent that does this, drop their a$$. How gross, read the room.”

Another notable actor voicing his opinion was Ralph Ineson. Quoting a tweet about Tilly, he wrote, “F#@k OFF.” And that pretty much sums it up…. Several other actors also condemned the announcement, including Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Jenna Leigh Green, and Toni Collette, who commented on Deadline’s Instagram post.
However, the most notable statement came from Emily Blunt, who, when appearing on a podcast with Variety, said, “That’s an AI? Good Lord, we’re screwed. That is really, really scary. Come on, agencies, don’t do that. Please stop. Please stop taking away our human connection.”
AI in Hollywood: Controversy and Industry Debate
Many have compared this uproar to the Hollywood strike and AI actors controversy of 2023–24. When performers rallied against the use of digital replicas and algorithmic replacements during contract negotiations.
SAG-AFTRA Responds to AI Actors
On 30th September 2025, SAG-AFTRA released a statement on their official website. In the released text, the Actor’s Union said, “To be clear, ‘Tilly Norwood’ is not an actor, it’s a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation.” The union also warned that this type of synthetic media and digital human creation is a direct threat to performers’ rights. It endangers the livelihoods of real actors and marks a key issue in their ongoing fight to protect creative labor.
Phew… If you think this is a lot, I haven’t even mentioned the online fan communities and their reactions, which definitely don’t support this creation.

The Creator’s Response:
If you have read the article up to this point, you should already have an idea of what her response to this massive backlash was. And again you’re right… She stood by her creation and reaffirmed her stance on this whole situation.
So, how exactly did she counter all this condemnation? By releasing a statement of her own in an Instagram post on her personal handle. She wrote, “Creating Tilly has been, for me, an act of imagination and craftsmanship, not unlike drawing a character, writing a role, or shaping a performance. It takes time, skill, and iteration to bring such a character to life.”
She further expanded on the role AI will play in the future in the entertainment industry. She explained, “I see AI not as a replacement for people, but as a new tool – a new paintbrush. Just as animation, puppetry, or CGI opened fresh possibilities without taking away from live acting, AI offers another way to imagine and build stories.”
So, What Does It All Mean Going Forward…
The Future of AI Actors in Hollywood
So, what does it all indicate? Do you think AI ‘actors’ will ever take off in the industry, or will any future attempts see similar reactions? What about the ‘technological advancements’ aspect, where, if such actors are so real that they do gain acceptance? And if so, to what degree?
All these questions arise in my head, even after seeing this outright rejected by everyone, despite the creator’s claims that many talent agents have approached her to get Tilly Norwood to sign with them. Are they seeing something we aren’t?

Here’s what I think – such actors gaining mainstream recognition is highly unlikely, even though Tilly has been dubbed the ‘next Scarlett Johansson,’ and they could become A-listers in the future. No chance…. This threatens actors’ job security, and no way they are ever going to let it take away their employment avenue.
And, why should they? No one wants AI to take away their jobs, and actors are no different. Forget the established stars for a second, there are millions of struggling actors auditioning for even the smallest of roles, and then they hear that something (not someone!) has completely made their job obsolete! Yeah, that’s not gonna fly!
AI as a Supportive Tool in Filmmaking
BUT…. Does this mean AI will be outrightly chucked out? I don’t think that either. I believe that even if it’s not in major roles, AI will definitely play a significant role in the acting department in the future, especially as it continues to improve. And, it will be interesting how SAG-AFTRA will fight against that, since this is a war they cannot avoid…. Ultimately, the launch of Tilly Norwood sparks a larger conversation about AI ethics in entertainment. It raises questions about how far technology should go before it erodes human creativity and fair representation.
Any other takes or perspectives? Sure. Here’s one: What if this was just a ‘publicity stunt’ to gain attention? I mean, we have seen those before, regardless of how genuine the ‘party’ may seem. But, at this point, I would only deem this as ‘a speculation.’

Lastly, Final Thoughts
So, here we are… all has been said. Before I share my final thoughts, I would like to ask for your views on this whole situation. Why don’t you go ahead and add a comment down below?
Now, to conclude, I think that in the future we will only see more and more attempts like ‘Tilly Norwood’ crawl up and come into the limelight. But I also believe that their creators’ quest to gain mainstream attention is very likely to be unsuccessful. And it should be like that!
No one wants AI to take jobs, but rather create them. Especially in the entertainment industry, no one wants to see such tech on screen, whether it’s part of the industry or not.
AI must be thought of as a tool, not a threat!
